Benefits of Running - Take A Look

First off, let me start with saying that is running is like a love/hate relationship; you either love or you hate it! It's tedious, sometimes painful, too boring and exhausting. Well, that's true to some point. It all depends on how you view it. Run fast? Run slow? Run for fun? Run for your health?

Anyway you look at it, running or jogging can be a great exercise for both your body and mind. You can run anytime, anywhere or with anyone, or run by yourself. It really doesn't mater; just lace up your shoes and go.

One of the greatest assets to a running lifestyle is it contributes to an overall healthy way of life. It's even a great way to meet new people or race against some of your best friends. Let's take a look at a few key benefits.

1. Weight Loss. Without a doubt, this is most likely the number one reason why many people take up running or jogging. From reading many running books and researching many articles, approximately 3/4 of people start running to manage their weight. Maybe they want to lose those last 10, 20 or so pounds. Beside cross country skiing, running burns the most calories and takes less equipment and is cheaper then most sports. Surprisingly, how fast a person runs has little effect on the number of calories he or she will burn. Usually, the more a person weighs the more weight they will lose.

2. Good Health. Running can reduce the risk of stroke, osteoporosis and help diabetes. Running strengthens your heart and even can make your arteries work better and make them more elastic. A body in action stays in action and a body at rest stays at rest. So keep moving and exercising your body to elevate your heart rate but ya don't want to over do it. About 30 minutes of moderate exercise three times a week is essential to good health. Running can also help lower high blood pressure and increase good cholesterol (HDL). Running also increases your sex drive. Oh, the many benefits...

3. Stress Relief. Running is like a natural tranquilizer for calming the body and releasing good hormones. Running relieves stress and tension and allows one to clear their mind. It may also help you find an answer to a problem you are having. I often feel very relaxed and refreshed after a run. Running cleanses my system and recycles the blood with oxygen and puts me in a great mood.

4. Runner's High. Most serious runners state their addiction to running goes above and beyond the physical benefits. Most runners claim the intense exhilaration and euphoric feeling they feel after a run is what motivates them to keep running. Additionally, many runners say running helps them achieve more energy and helps them maintain some sort of balance between appetite, exercise and sleep.

5. Positive Attitude/Increased Self Esteem. Running just simply makes you feel good. It definitely creates self confidence which affects ones attitude. It can make you feel happier and enhances mental alertness. Running provides you a better outlook on your life and gives you the inner drive and determination to succeed.

6. Diet. If you run regularly, you tend to eat healthier. I do. Most runners watch what they eat. They stay away from the high saturated fats, sodas, white bread and candies. These foods do more harm then good. Make sure to drink plenty of fluids, i.e., alkaline water, recovery drinks like Endurox R4 or purified water. After all, You Are What You Eat!

Want to feel better, have more energy and perhaps even live longer? Look no further than old fashioned running. It's simple, cheap and could save your life!
